Ben Shapiro Mocked on Twitter for Saying Crime Should Be Banned

Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro was mocked on Twitter after complaining that none of New York City's Democratic mayoral candidates pledged to ban crime.

Shapiro was responding to a tweet that listed answers proferred by candidates when asked what they would ban if elected during Wednesday's primary debate. Andrew Yang said ATVs, Kathryn Garcia said corn syrup while Maya Wiley said sugary drinks.

Shapiro took to Twitter on Friday to point out what he saw as a glaring omission among the replies. "Notably, nobody said crime," he wrote in a tweet that was promptly "ratioed," amassing more than 6,700 replies.

Many pointed out what Shapiro appeared to have missed: that crime, by definition, is already banned.

"Crimes are already banned, Ben. That's why they're crimes," one reply, that garnered more than 10,000 likes, said.

"Who's gonna tell him," reporter Jan Wolfe wrote in a quote-tweet.

"Why didn't we think of banning crime earlier? Excellent idea, Benjamin!" Matt Watson replied to Shapiro.

"I was pretty positive this ridiculous tweet had to be a photoshopped spoof, but no, it's there on his timeline," wrote Kevin M. Kruse. "Thank you, Ben Shapiro, for being brave enough to demand we finally start banning crimes."

Nima Shirazi added: "Notably, crime is already illegal. This intellectual powerhouse continues to impress."

"For once I agree with you, Ben. We need a candidate brave enough to say that crime should be illegal," Cody Johnston replied to Shapiro's tweet.

Others simply made fun of Shapiro for the tweet.

"Gonna file a bill on Monday to ban crime," Sen. Brian Schatz from Hawaii tweeted.

"It should be a crime to be as stupid as Ben Shapiro," tweeted Majid Padellan.

"Ben Shapiro out here doing all the important thinking," added Tara Dublin.

Dean Obeidallah wrote: "Ben Shapiro 'insightfully' claims not one of the Democratic candidates for NYC mayor called for "banning" crime. Once again I need to remind everyone that Ben Shapiro is considered an intellectual genius on the right...please stop laughing :)."

Rick G. Rosner added: "Ben Shapiro doesn't see the point of banning junk food, because when you're the size of an eight-year-old boy, you can pretty much eat whatever you want."

Kelly Scaletta joked: "There's some stiff competition, but Ben Shapiro might be the dumbest person to ever graduate from Harvard."
